    Pros:

Since installed in October 2012, I’ve put 8,000 mi on them. I’ve taken it through moderate snow, heavy rain, light rain, sleet, and dry conditions many over single continuous 1000mi trips, on Interstate, local roads and dirt roads. I lowered speed appropriately for the conditions. I drove through empty malls during snow and rain, and hit the brakes hard to see how badly these tires would slip or lock up; I also tried braking harder when in highway but free of traffic to see how these tires responded.

Never once did I nearly lose control from 55-90 mph. Gaining confidence, I cornered them hard, not a hint of an issue with control.

These tires are among the quietest I’ve used, and I’ve no issues using voice activated GPS, using my speakerphone cellphone or listening to chamber music.

My average gas consumption rose +3mpg over those 8000 mi. The new tires was the only thing different this year I’ve added to my car compared to previous years.

Thread wear at 8000mi is not detectable, measured with a caliper.

    Cons

Many consumer reviews give RS-A a 3/5, yet these tires are often standard in police cars. A new study called 2011 Police Vehicle Tire Evaluation is available publicly, Google file “MSP_Tire_Evaluation_367666_7.pdf”. These tires do the duty well. The RS-A is at times standard equipment on some new cars.

“police” RS-A can be “RS-A plus” introduced in 2002; its identical to the regular tire except has an aramid coat to prolong service life, its thread index is 340 while standard RS-A is 260. However, original RS-A was used on police vehicles before 2002, the same construction sold to consumers, the model tire has been around since 1992, and there are police tests found on Google before 2002. How can a poorly rated model last so long in the market and receive some really bad reviews?

Top consumer ranked tires typically are $700-1000 installed for 4, but my Toyota dealership offered 4 RS-A for $350, all included. If the tires lasted >=2 years, I’d break even, and I was more inclined to believe the police reviews more.

It may be bad reviews come from owners with worn tires. Given the thread life rating, it could happen in much less time that other tires. My tires are essentially new, and as new it performs well and its more in line with the police studies. Given the cost of top tires with better thread life, I’d break even if these tires last half as long as better consumer rated tires, so its a good buy at $88 each, all inclusive.

Traveling in Alaska, I managed to run something through one of my tires. I had intended to replace all my tires on my return to the lower 48, but since I needed one, I went shopping for new tires. In Alaska, my choices were limited. I checked Amazon, never thinking I’d be able to purchase the tires I wanted, at a most favorable price AND get free delivery to my location in Alaska. My car and I thank Goodyear and Amazon.
