Off-roading in Sedona, Arizona

Visit us at www.rimpainter.com. Off-roading in Sedona, Arizona. On this day we ran Broken Arrow, Soldier’s Pass, Seven Sacred Ponds, and the Gas Pipeline trail, respectively. Broken Arrow was the most scenic trail, but before you think about taking that Escalade on 20′s or your Avis Ford Freestyle rent-a-car, know that you probably won’t make it without serious damage. In fact, there is a strategically placed “step” at the beginning of the trial to dissuade all those would-be off-roaders in low-clearance vehicles out there. We hope you enjoy this video!

my 93 has a 3.0 and im in the processing of rebuilding it now

  • cdaviesaz:

No, I cut the protective cover from the inside. You’ll see. Just make sure you make some kind of rain blocker for it.

  • drgoodspd:

did you just drill out holez in the scoop to make it functional?

  • cdaviesaz:

Yes, the hood just swaps over. I believe the scooped-hoods became available in 99 with the introduction of the Highlander Edition. An interesting tidbit is that I did a bit of testing after I made the scoop function (it comes blocked from the factory) and it actually lets hot air out while slowing or stopped vs. cool air in while driving. Weird huh? I made a little rain blocker plate so I just put that on when it rains.

  • drgoodspd:

i have a 97….can i just swap a scooped hood.. did any 97′s come with a scoop? or will i have do do some modifications?

  • cdaviesaz:

I snagged it on CL for $50, LOL. As far as the e-locker goes, I just bought a donor rig, swapped it over, then sold the donor rig for slightly more than I bought it for. Worked out great, but I did have to swap the front and rear of both rigs due to gear ratio differences. Not cool in the AZ heat!

  • drgoodspd:

sweet….what did that scoop cost?i’ve got scoop envy, so bad!…do u know where to pick up an e-locker for a decent price?

  • fenderguitarist05:

yea thats what killed mine. So is there anyway to know if u are getting a good 4Runner with a 3.0 or were they all bad? because ive seen some with a ton of miles on them.

  • cdaviesaz:

The engine has been solid. Only trouble I’ve had is with the starter contacts. I replaced them myself for $20. The older 3.0 on the other hand, had a lot of issues, most notably the notorious headgasket failure.

  • firebird890:

Toyotas are awesome man they have really good reliability and their products are cool including their luxury division Lexus

  • cdaviesaz:

Oh, and I’ve since added a functional scooped OEM hood (Line-x’d)

  • cdaviesaz:

3.4 V6, 5-speed manual, 4.30 diffs, OEM locked rear diff, TRD SC’r, SMT6 piggyback, 2-step colder plugs, 308cc injectors, Walbro 190 fuel pump, 6″ deckplate and removed intake elbow, ISR mod, Edelbrock headers, Jardine 2.5″ cat back exhaust, Bilstein suspension, 1″ Roger Brown body lift, Addco rear sway bar.

Good video guys. Looks like a fun day. Would like to know what the first S/C’d 4runners got. couldnt read all the text on the video.

  • cdaviesaz:

No, it’s in Sedona. An F-150 with a good driver should make it, yes. But don’t get stuck or you will really piss off the Pink Jeep Tour guys (who maintain the trail but do not own it).

  • phatchase:

is this near Avondale? woud an F-150 make it through this w/ a 3” body lift and all terain tires?

  • fenderguitarist05:

do u have any engine problems. our old 4runner always had engine problems with the valves and all that stuff and we eventually just sold it.

  • cdaviesaz:

    Thanks!

  • fenderguitarist05:

    very nice 4runner!

  • burgandyblood:

    Whoa….neat!

  • cdaviesaz:

Depends on the model I guess. An H1 would not be a “tread lightly” experience. And “little damage” is still some. ;)

  • eyebrows4:

I live in sedona and hummers can infact fit on theese trails, a hummer group was oht here runing theese trails about 3 months ago and got through with little damage.

  • cdaviesaz:

    Alex-
It’s going to be hard to explain it to you. It’s a very well-known trail that is maintained by Pink Jeep Tours. There’s an un-written rule to yield to those tours when you’re there. Sorry I can’t give you more details, but it’s an easy place to find because it’s so well-traveled. Just head up and ask around. It’s somewhat close to the Safeway off 89A.

  • hexagon666:

hey thats a cool vid. well i was wondering where in sedona that was taken. i go to sedona about twice a year and i luv to offroad my truck. any description of where in sedona this is or how to get there from the I-17 would be very helpful. thanks.

  • cdaviesaz:

Everything went great on the rest of the trail. No scrapes, AZ pinstriping, or issues. You would have been fine, but I don’t blame you for being cautious with a 2K mile drive ahead of you. Beautiful place huh?

  • chrismeyer86:

I was at Broken Arrow in Sedona just a week ago and after climbing a little past that first giant flat rock after the turnaround, I was terrified to continue in my stock ’97 4runner with a 2000 mile drive home. I’m curious, how did the stock do on the rest of the trail? I plan on going back. Hey thanks for the post.
